Premise: Bea Arthur (Dorothy) quit Golden Girls, so the producers repackaged
the rest of the cast (Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty) as owners of a struggling
South Miami Beach hotel. Helping out is college kid Roland (Don Cheadle) and chef Chuy Castillos
(Cheech Marin). Also aboard is orphan Oliver (Billy Sullivan), the 12-year-old Palace
prince.
Pedigree: Produced by Golden Girls vets Paul Junger Witt, Tony Thomas, Susan Harris and Marc Sotkin; pilot script by Harris (Soap). Quote: "I'm sure Rose will have to get her act together," says White. "Estelle will have three new people to terrorize, and Blanche is the only one I worry about trusting with a hotel, but we'll keep an eye on her." One to watch: Bea Arthur (look for her to visit the girls during the November sweeps) and the manic Marin, one-half of the comedy team Cheech and Chong. Chances: CBS must think it'll work; Palace leads off it's revamped Friday-night lineup, preceeding Major Dad. But watch out for that Urkel kid over on ABC. Bottom line: No pilot (none needed with this cast), but maybe Bea was right: Golden Girls had run its course. |
