Bea
Arthur can barely wait to quit Golden Girls and look for off-screen
adventure in England. She’s signed for a seventh season but
says it will be her last.
“You’ve
got four ladies over the age of menopause and, well, it’s time
for a change,” says Bea. “We’re starting to get
on each other’s nerves.
“We
work our fannies off for eight months, and it takes its toll.”
With
the NBC show on a break until the summer, Bea, who plays cynical,
sensible Dorothy, is already making plans for the day she leaves the
show. Top of her list is a trip to London to buy property.
“I’ve
been told you can get fantastic buys in London real estate,”
she says, “and I am seriously thinking of investing in something.
It would be wonderful.”
An
insider says: “Bea is tired of playing Dorothy. Betty White
tries to persuade Bea to stick it out with them, but Bea gives Betty
a stony look that says, ‘Stay out of my affairs.’
“The
‘girls’ keep poking into her business, just like their
characters do on the show. It’s enough to drive anyone nutty.”
Bea,
66, whose 29-year-marriage to director Gene Saks ended in divorce
in 1979, is now dating Australian TV executive Glen Kinging.
After
six years in one of TV’s most popular shows, Bea seems more
interested in play than work.
“Unlike
a great many other people, I’m just as happy not working,”
she says.
“I’ll
be darned if I’ll do just an average TV movie or make a guest
appearance.”
